My dad, Ken Plant, and I are big fans of minigolf and today we tried out an indoor black light course in Blaine: Glow in One Mini Golf. We entered the strip mall business and owner Brian Miller welcomed us at the front desk. He helped us get our golf equipment, glow-in-the-dark bracelets, and score card. Then he got us set-up on the course letting us know about the mischief wheels sprinkled by a few holes allowing for some randomized silliness throughout the game. Then my dad and I putted our way through the 18-hole course enjoying the bright florescent colors and the challenging geometric holes.
The artistic murals and music made the time fly and it was a nice way to spend some family bonding time. I asked my dad what he thought about our putt-putt experience. What was your favorite part dad? Ken: It was fun and creative way to spend the afternoon with my daughter. How do you feel about winning? Ken: [Laughing] It was good to see that an old Marine can still beat his youthful daughter.
Okay, I didn't win this time around. But, I was only a few strokes behind and after a fun and quick-paced game, I certainly felt like a winner.
Glow in One Mini Golf is just over a year old and is very reasonably priced. With a cold Minnesota winter, Kiddos and their families would be lucky to enjoy a family outing to Glow in One. I recommend making this indoor golf course a destination even if you are only a kid at heart.

Q&A with creative biz owner Brian Miller
Brian Miller, who owns Glow In One Mini Golf with his wife and brother-in-law, answered a few of my questions about the creation of the course, what visitors can expect to find on their visit, and their current Halloween course. How did you think of the concept?
Brian: I saw [a glow in the dark miniature golf course] in Arizona when I was visiting my twin brother and we were looking for something fun to do. We thought it was super cool and decided we deserved one here in Minnesota. How did you come up with the course? Have you done woodworking? Brian: Nope, I haven’t done anything like this before. I made one hole in my garage. It worked and that’s where we started from. I played around. It’s indoors and it can’t be as big as outdoor minigolf. I had to make the holes challenging, and as you saw they look easy but some of them are pretty tough. What helped you come up with the ideas? Brian: Just messing around in my garage trying to think of ideas and looking at other golf courses. How did you decide to decorate? What inspired the art work? Brian: One of our friends, Amanda Olson, painted our guy [points Dimples, their golf guy logo]. We went from there. She did the graffiti sign, the sunset back there and she took a bunch of canvases home and painted her newest art works there. Can you tell us about the spooky theme that is happening right now? Brian: We just decorated for Halloween. We put up a bunch of spiderwebs, scary little ghost characters and added skulls on the course for obstacles. We just got in new Halloween pumpkin golf balls. Festive! Why would you recommend folks come out and golf with you? Brian: Something different! It’s different from the mini-golf you are used to in Minnesota. And we are always trying to be better; We’re switching things around. We do have three mischief wheels that make it more interesting. You spin the wheel and it gives you something fun to do like close your eyes or swing behind your back. We also have the bean bag toss that people can play while they are waiting or you can stay afterwards and play as well. |
