5 takes place at a gas station in a rapidly gentrifying neighborhood, where best friends Jay and Evan are faced with a tough decision that puts their friendship to the test. When a real estate developer offers to buy their store, the two are faced with a tough decision that puts their friendship to the test. As the pressure to sell mounts...you'll have to see the show because I don't want to give away spoilers. The play's strength lies in its depth and authenticity of the main characters and the nuanced exploration of some weighty themes. 5 is a testament to the importance of supporting new works in American theater, providing playwrights with the opportunity to develop and refine their stories before they are seen by audiences. The result is a play that is both timely and timeless with touches of magical realism sprinkled through all aspects of the show and it gets weird — in a good way, cause that's how I like my theater.
Rave Reviews From Fellow Twin Cities Theater Bloggers:
~Life in Revue
"5 is a Co-Production Between Trademark Theater and the Jungle Theater and It Rates a 10!" ~The Stages of MN "JuCoby Johnson has written a smart script that is set in real life scenarios and mystical elements. 5 is a must see." ~Play Off The Page "Playwright JuCoby Johnson, who also portrays Jay, has written a play with dialogue that sounds like how people really talk. The characters and relationships are crisply drawn, and the story is believable." ~Cherry and Spoon |
The staging and design of 5 are also noteworthy, with the Jungle Theater's intimate space utilized to great effect. The gas station set is very realistic and the use of sound and lighting adds to the increasing sense of unease and foreboding as the play progresses.
I was particularly impressed with the play's ability to tackle weighty themes like gentrification and racism with nuance and sensitivity. Instead of hitting the audience over the head with a heavy-handed message, the play allowed the audience to come to their own conclusions, making for a more rewarding and thought-provoking experience. 5 delves into the complex relationships between the characters, the community, and the world around them, culminating in a thought-provoking conclusion. While 5 is a poignant and intimate portrayal of life-long friendship, it is also a haunting a haunting reflection of American history playing out though hopefully not the future. Overall, I recommend 5 to theatergoers who appreciate character-driven plays with powerful themes. |

5 Co-production: Trademark Theater & The Jungle Theater at the Jungle Theater in Uptown March 11 - April 16, 2023 PAY AS YOU ARE PRICING The Jungle believes that A PLAY ISN’T COMPLETE WITHOUT AN AUDIENCE. To help reach a wider audience, we implemented PAY AS YOU ARE pricing last season for single-ticket purchasers and are excited to continue using that model. PAY AS YOU ARE pricing asks those who routinely pay $45 for theater tickets to pay that amount; it is the actual fair market value of the ticket. If an audience member needs to pay less, they can choose to pay less. Those who can pay more than the market price are welcome to do so, and their generosity will help cover the cost of someone else’s ticket. | The Jungle Theater 2951 Lyndale Avenue South Minneapolis, MN 55408 |
