An effective production, The Nether is both compelling and creepy. The five characters lead the audience through a futuristic crime investigation with glimpses into a virtual Victorian house where online guests embody avatars for a chance to experience “life without consequences.” Without giving away too much of the plot, audience members will likely squirm at the uncomfortable nature of what is implied on stage. This is not a kid-friendly production, so do a little research about the show or contact the Jungle Theater if you need to know more about what to expect.
How was the show? It took me a while to unpack my thoughts about the experience. I recommend that adventurous theater-goers make The Nether a must-see. The show pushes patrons out of their comfort zones and encourages them to think.

The Nether
by Jennifer Haley The Jungle Theater September 16-October 15, 201
A smart and tightly wound drama, The Nether is both serpentine crime story and haunting sci-fi thriller exploring the consequences of living out private dreams in a world of ever-advancing technology.
In The Nether, when a detective uncovers a disturbing brand of online entertainment, she triggers an intense battle between technology and human desire. The New York Times called it a “very cunning and equally creepy new play about alternative lives in a future around the corner.” Just under 90 minutes with no intermission, the powerful, thought-provoking show has had audiences talking about the play long after its end, prompting the Houston Press to affirm that “this urge to discuss is the mark of a brilliant night in the theater.”
Tickets: $35-$45
