What can audiences expect when they enter the theater?

Cassandra: I am so excited for this show - Manny and I spent 15 years producing theatre together as well as really fun "out there" events and this brings us back into that fold ! When the audience comes, they'll be walking into a heightened TTRPG play space. For the live show, the GM is really focused on telling a coherent and self-contained story that audiences and us players will love.

As co-producer, I'm bringing immersive ideas of how to make the show more fun beyond that.

"[The audience] will be be sucked into a long form improv where the dice AND THEIR contributions help us tell the story."

~Cassandra Snow, Minneapolis Theater Maker, Author and Tarot Reader

In addition to being a cast of seasoned actors and improvisers, audience will get some dice rolls in themselves. They'll get to shout and suggest things that will impact the story if they choose to. (When prompted, like in improv). They'll essentially be sucked into a long form improv where the dice AND THEIR contributions help us tell the story.

The story itself takes what anime calls Isekai (which is a story where characters are transported from our ordinary world to a magical one) and turns that idea on its head. In our story, monsters, magic and creatures we don't expect show up in our world.

They're amazed and horrified by it, bringing both comedy and a mirror to our lives. Each player/character will have to decide how to deal with this and what their role is. Add in audience ideas and dice rolls and it should be a whimsical and unpredictable time (if rooted in very real issues)!

This cast and creative team bring a strong sense of care and justice into the work. How do those values show up in the story and in the way you play together on stage?

Cassandra: One thing we really want to do with this show is highlight how different personalities and skillsets and values can still work together to find the best, most compassionate solutions possible. DnD is a perfect set-up for this exploration. Tabletop Gaming itself is doing this work on a microcosmic scale. Theatre itself is like this too. Its putting a bunch of people with similar but tweaked passions into a room and alchemizing that into something awesome.

This specific show format gives us a chance to play with that and "say something" while ALSO making the "work" of justice fun, personable and rooted in connection. I think we often scare people when talking activism or advocacy - this show will (hopefully) remind people that being who they are and forming real relationships with people of all ilk IS ALSO the work, and we have a hell of a lot more to gain by coming together but highlighting our own specialties than we do by savior mentality or anything like that.

Live actual play means the story can change in real time based on dice rolls and audience energy. What excites you most about that unpredictability as performers and storytellers?
Cassandra: Some of the people in this show are extremely seasoned improvisers who are VERY used to that energetic tradeoff. So for, say, Chris Rodriguez, that idea of interplay and HAVING to think fast on his feet is the whole draw of what we're doing. Its the adrenaline and the unpredictability they are seeking. For some of us its a chance to play on a larger scale - with audience, etc. and learn more about ourselves as storytellers, improvisers and character actors. I think we run the gamut- but what congeals us is a love of curating audience experience and also trying new stuff!

For audiences who love theater but may not have experience with tabletop games, what do you think will feel most familiar or surprising about watching a campaign unfold live?
Cassandra: I i think a lot of people don't understand how story-oriented a good TTRPG is! So much of the draw is essentially getting to play pretend with your friends for a few hours. There are, of course, game mechanics and there are, of course rules that you have to follow. Still, an actual play essentially watches like long form improv with a few very surprising twists and turns that even we have no way to account for. It's as silly as it is anything else, and yet in all the silliness sits love of the game, shared experience, and a raw, human heart. Its so much like any other art - don't let the idea that there are game mechanics scare you off!

This show welcomes longtime TTRPG fans as well as newcomers. What do you hope someone who has never played Dungeons and Dragons before takes away from the experience?
Cassandra: For those people, we have our very experienced GM not only guiding the story, but making sure the audience knows what's going on. The big takeaway for people interested but inexperienced in TTRPGs, we want it to look as accessible as it is or can be to get started and we ALSO want to showcase that really, games can be anything! It's not all the highest of fantasy but it can be! There aren't limits beyond the game mechanics existing, and once you start playing you realize that those things actually help you play better and relax into the game structure.

What didn’t I ask that you’d love to share with audiences before they come to see the show?
Cassandra: I'm just obsessed with this cast and want everyone else to be too so here's some basic bio stuff I want to share!

Ernie Hsu was the absolute star of the last show I produced. Ernie is so talented, so funny and so imaginative. By day you can catch them doing sex education work at Family Tree Clinic. When they aren't working they are diving into experimental, queer and funky work in a myriad of ways! Most recently they did a backyard staged reading of "Faggots and Their Friends Between Revolutions" by Larry Mitchell.

Chris Rodriguez is one of the 3 genius minds behind Very Good Improv, which opened in the face of Huge Theater closing to provide improv education, community and opportunity. You may have seen him at Strike Theater recently, or any number of other venues where he rocks the stage many nights a week. My personal recent favorite was working together on History Is Queer! As part of Queer & Funny Improv, but he's probably best known for being in the long-running Star Trek improv.

Mickaylee Shaughnessy is equal parts traditional actor and improviser, and one of the funniest people I've ever met. Audience may recognize her from Improvocation, scaring the poop out of you during Haunted Basement, or most recently from "Misfits and Mistletoe" at The Phoenix Theater.

Manny Elliott is my queerplatonic life partner and co-parent so this might sound biased but they are the best GM in the whole world. They do this professionally at Bad Wolf Studios, and are pumped to be bringing this passion and experience to the stage. We ran Gadfly Theatre Productions together happily for 16 years, until the pandemic taught us that free time is nice, actually, so we've stayed on hiatus to enjoy life. TiTteRPiGs is a much lower stakes venture, but with their game prowess and our combined producing experience, we're hoping to elevate the actual play experience and are specifically focusing on live shows with hopes to revamp our podcast when we have some pennies saved up for things like editing.

<div style="height: 20px; Not only do the student cast and crew get the chance to work with the talented artists at Theatre in the Round (like director Gretchen Weinrich and set designer Madeline Achen) they get the excitement of staging a production on a beloved Twin Cities arena (audience on all sides) stage as part of the Theatre in the Round season which is open to the public.

TRP Executive Director Larisa Netterlund's program note she adds, "For our patrons, our hope is that watching this next generation of artists will make you feel inspired, invigorated, and hopeful about the future of theater." What a wonderful way to celebrate spooky season with friends and our great local arts community.

And then today November rolled in and I am grieving for the loss of HUGE Theater (our local improvisation theater closed) as I lined up my Give to the Max donations, since I have donated to HUGE annually at this time of year. But in the midst of that sadness I realized that in the past year some of my partner and my most amazing joys and arts adventures have been from following our favorite improv groups to new physical theaters where they are performing. It's great to explore the Twin Cities and be improv groupies.

One of our absolutely favorite groups is The Bearded Company. Along with The Shrieking Harpies, The Bearded Company are my recommendation to introduce Minneapolis improv newbies to the the fun and playfulness of attending improv. And last night we saw The Bearded Company’s Swords & Sorcery at Theatre in the Round. What a truly magical way to enjoy some laughs and kick off a weekend!

The one hour show we saw was made up on the spot with the help from a 20-sided die. Nerd stuff, yay! The story revolved around a chaotic good baker, Doug Ocar (Owner and director at ComedySportz Twin Cities) who was put in the king's dungeon and then forced to transform and feed people from the kingdom to the king. There was romance, heroic adventure, and lots of belly laughs. I honestly wish I could see all four performances (the full continuation of the story because each show is different.)

I recommend catching this show! It's playing in repertory (rotation) on the same stage with another show, Those Who Remain Turn the Pages which I'm catching tonight. Also mark your calendar for May, because The Bearded Company is returning to Theatre in the Round to run in rep with The Hobbit. Yay, MORE nerd stuff!!! I definitely recommend attending Swords & Sorcery.

Keep supporting local artists. Bring your friends and family to the theater. Make art and get creative. Get out from behind your screens and have some adventures in your community. Donate to a local nonprofit. This is not a new issue, and unfortunately, it is not improving. In fact, it’s getting worse.

I first heard about the national ENOUGH project this summer, in the wake of the heartbreaking deaths of Mark and Melissa Hortman. I had the honor of hearing Speaker Melissa Hortman speak at Minnesota Arts Advocacy Day at the Capitol last winter, and was deeply moved by her commitment to the arts. Bringing ENOUGH to our community felt like a meaningful way to honor her advocacy, bring people together who are ready to push for change, and - most importantly - amplify the voices of teens in our community and beyond.

What kind of conversations and impact are you hoping for this to have on the involved artists and audiences?

Sandy: Art is a powerful form of resistance. It helps us process pain, challenge injustice, and imagine a better path forward. Our hope is that these plays will ignite critical conversations and inspire real, lasting change in communities across the country.

Teens are asking hard questions - how do we avoid becoming another statistic? How do we make our voices heard? We got dressed up (optional!) and made our way to the Minnesota Opera's The Barber of Seville, which will be onstage at the Ordway from May 3-18, 2025. If you don't have a lot of opera experience or know someone who could use a friendly introduction to the art form, this production is the perfect way to dive in!

The Barber of Seville, at the Ordway Music theater in Saint Paul, is packed with comedy, colorful characters, and music you’ll recognize even if you’ve never seen an opera before. The story is easy to follow (with English super titles projected above the stage), the energy is infectious, and the performances are both playful and impressive. It's approachable for newcomers while still delighting longtime opera fans. I've seen this opera at least once before and this production is one I won't forget.

I have a lot of favorites from this experience, but I want to point out the scenery, the costumes, the beautiful music and the comedic physical acting of Don Basilio (played by Stefan Egerstrom when I saw the show) as especially delightful.

Just a reminder that my blog posts are reflective of my experience! I'm not paid to review shows, but I do (like in this instance) receive free tickets. This charming operetta is playing at the Howard Conn Theater in Minneapolis from March 14 to April 6, 2025, and it offers a delightful mix of humor, romance, and musical numbers that had me smiling from start to finish. They were wonderful. I'm so grateful for understudies as I know that this is a high-energy show with a big cast and the flexibility of having more than one person know a leading role means that, as an audience, I have more opportunities to experience a show. I wouldn't have even known these weren't the regular cast if I hadn't been told!

"Good music, performed well, is timeless."

Check out the 2023 Artfully Engaging Artist Interview with The Gilbert & Sullivan Very Light Opera Company's Gary Briggle, Dr. Randal Buikema, and Stephen Hage.

So, if you aren't familiar with this show yet, it is set during the aesthetic craze of the late 1800s, which I was not familiar with by name. Although, I am familiar with Oscar Wilde. (who, according to the program, was a fan of this show!) Patience hilariously pokes fun at trends and fads. It follows two rival poets, Reginald Bunthorne and Archibald Grosvenor, who are adored by a chorus of swooning young women obsessed with all things “aesthetic.” Both poets, however, have their sights set on Patience, a sweet, no-nonsense milkmaid. Meanwhile, the chorus of women have abandoned their military suitors and the men's chorus then try to win them back by adopting the poets’ over-the-top aesthetic style—leading to plenty of ridiculous moments.

As someone who grew up singing in choirs, I especially loved the gorgeous harmonies and lively musical numbers. The cast’s vocal performances were top-notch, with beautifully blended ensemble singing and standout solos. The live orchestra did a tremendous job and it really added to the full opera experience.

The bright, Victorian-era costumes and the playful garden set design added to the fun, while the satire still feels surprisingly relevant. The show pokes fun at the way society latches onto trends—something we can definitely still relate to today! One of my favorite moments was a garden fountain that, when an actor manually cranked it, created the illusion of water flowing—a charming and whimsical touch that made me giggle at the cleverness. There was a lot of giggling during this performance!

If you love Gilbert & Sullivan’s sharp wit and catchy music or you’re just looking for a fun night or afternoon out, this production is a treat. With its satire, silly romance, and memorable tunes, Patience offers plenty of laughs, great music, and a little Victorian flair. It’s light, delightful, and a perfect way to experience live theater!

Artfully,

Ticket Information

Adults: $30.00
Children (under 12): $15.00
Rush Tickets:
Available for $15 at each performance on a first-come, first-served basis if tickets are available ten minutes before the show.

Except for preview, all tickets are assigned seating.

Remaining Performances:

March 28 – 7:30 pm
March 29 – 2:00 pm
March 29 – 7:30 pm
March 30 – 2:00 pm

April 4 – 7:30 pm
April 5 – 7:30 pm (Live-streamed)
April 6 – 2:00 pm

1900 Nicollet Avenue South

The Conn Theater shares a parking lot with Plymouth Congregational Church and there is free parking for all GSVLOC shows.
On the bus line!

 More Information

Please note that The Gilbert & Sullivan Very Light Opera Company provided me with two theater tickets to this event. I want to keep things transparent! Having never read the book or seen the film, I was completely captivated as the story unfolded through stunning puppetry, evocative lighting, and immersive scenery. There are six puppeteers in the show. Pretty much every actor in the show does some kind of puppetry

The play follows sixteen-year-old Pi as he recounts his harrowing journey after a shipwreck leaves him stranded on a lifeboat with a hyena, a zebra, an orangutan, and a Bengal tiger—brought to life by masterful puppeteers. Set within a hospital room with flashbacks to his family’s ill-fated voyage, the show explores resilience, the complexities of belief, and the raw realities of survival with nuance and depth. The ending took me by surprise, and I was deeply engaged from start to finish. If you’re looking for a theater experience that’s both visually stunning and thought-provoking, this is one to see!

"The most important thing to remember is that the audience needs to believe the puppet is alive. If that doesn’t happen, everything else is lost.

Puppets appeal to the audience’s sense of play, and there is a silent contract between the audience and the puppeteers to suspend all disbelief.

It’s the same as two children agreeing to play with a toy. I find the shows to be high-quality and thoughtfully produced, and this show was no different.

The story alternates between two timelines, both centering around an accomplished scientists trying to manage their dedication to their work and to their families. Or as the title of the play phrases it, their "legacies." In many ways this six-member cast performed deftly, weaving in and out of time and place, as an effective ensemble. However my favorite parts of the play revolved around the character Émilie du Châtelet, a mathematician and scientist in 18th century France, played by Rachel Postle. Other stand out performances by David Denniger as Voltaire and Emma Tonn as Millie/Pauline.

I don't want to say too much about the story as it shifts and builds in the first act and really comes together for a satisfying act two. The script brings both humor and intellectually intriguing ideas to some very relatable characters - much like The Book Club Play. Also, I appreciate this performance calling out the dire need for maternal health advancements and access to reproductive healthcare.

Overall, it was a great night at the theater. My theater partner was, "pleasantly surprised" with their first ever Theatre in the Round production. And shout out to the lighting in the show! There is some beautiful light work incorporating the scientific themes and that was a joy to watch.

I recommend you add this show to your calendar. More than anything it’s super goofy and fun, and doesn’t take itself seriously in any way. The show is also musical and uses a lot of audience interaction, so it will feel very much like a sermon (gone awry).

How did this show come to be?

Hannah: Every year I do a one off musical show around Valentine’s Day weekend that explores some facet of love and lust. There are so many really thoughtful and poignant and emotionally driven improv shows being done in the twin cities (that are incredible), and this just isn’t one of them. The show featured “Blue Skies,” “Sisters,” and of course, “White Christmas.” The cast really brought the music to life, and the dancing was so fun to watch—it had the whole audience smiling, tapping their feet, and singing along!

The evening started with a yummy dinner, and with holiday themed drinks in hand, we settled in for a festive holiday show - in October! The cast, including Michael Gruber as Bob Wallace and Tony Vierling as Phil Davis, gave energetic performances that made the night very enjoyable. The dazzling choreography (Tamara Kangas Erickson) and the vibrant costumes (Rich Hamson) added an extra layer of excitement and joy to the entire musical - the dancing and costumes truly create a magic atmosphere in the musicals at Chanhassen Dinner Theatres!

But you can't have a musical without the music (music direction by Andy Kust), and while the entire cast delivered strong vocal performances, the women truly stood out with their energy and presence. Ann Michels as Betty Haynes, Andrea Mislan as Judy Haynes, and Michelle Barber as Martha Watson brought incredible vitality to the stage and really made the night for me! Performances in songs like "Sisters," "Love, You Didn't Do Right By Me," and "Let Me Sing and I'm Happy" were memorable highlights that left a lasting impression on the audience.

The costumes were vibrant, the choreography was upbeat, and the whole production was pure holiday magic. I really enjoyed this show. It wasn't a surprise because Blackout Improv has had some great performances in the Twin Cities but this was maybe my favorite. It's improv so every performance is different but the performance I saw has a special guest: comedian and musician Devhon Bland. Lots of laughter during his set. I've seen him around town at standup performances but again, this was an especially great performance. My performance also had a bit with Destiny Davison a.k..a Dolly who did a very heartfelt and charming puppet improv with the rest of the cast. I caught this play on opening night and it made me laugh and cry and I recommend taking the time to attend this thoughtful production.

In this interview, we delve into the inspiration behind Holy O, the creative process of weaving real stories into the narrative, and how the show balances humor and depth when discussing complex topics. I was dealing with my own issues of the disconnectedness between my body, spirit, and sexuality. I knew that to get to a healthier state I had to explore my issues and bring these parts of my life together in a more unifying way. Enter therapy, girlfriend talk, and art! As I began sharing my story with other women, they wanted to share their stories with me. I knew that I was on to something. Laughter, in its best form, is incredibly unifying. When we laugh together, it is an auditory and physical sign that says, "Oh, you too!" Laughter bonds people together. When you laugh together, it opens the door for you to get a little deeper and maybe even cry together. Part of creating a safe space is bringing some laughter into the mix.

Additionally, from the opening of the show, I begin in a very vulnerable state. I take on the brunt of the jokes and the unease, which creates a space for others to feel safe going on the journey with me. Holy O is interactive, and to get people to participate, I have to be vulnerable myself. The show is carefully crafted that way on purpose.

When people feel safe, they can broach the more difficult subject matters. Holy O broaches some complicated subject matters such as assault, abuse, and suicide, and the stories are told in such a way that they begin with a more light-hearted stance. And the seriousness of the subject matters is never treated with judgment, but simply "this is how it is." It makes the difficult moments easier to get through. While the Holy O does not end with a tidy solution, it does point to hope, which helps audiences process the complex subjects they've just encountered.

Follow @theholyoplay on Instagram!

Describe your show in three words or less.

Lauren: Laugh. It really helps with marketing and getting people in the door.

If others are thinking about Independent Producing a Minnesota Fringe, I highly recommend it. Participating in Fringe was the beginning of both of these companies, and without Fringe, these two companies may not be doing what they are doing now. Both Melancholics Anonymous and an Alleged Theater Company produce quirky shows. Fringe has given them a place to try out their ideas and see if people are into it - and they are! Fringe is such a low financial stake that companies can really get experimental to see what might work in their season lineup. Additionally, Fringe helps local artists, like these two companies, build an audience base, which in turn helps them build a stronger year-round company.

I am a touring artist, and when I first started doing Fringe, I was a little put off by some fringes allocating large percentages of the lineup to local talent and much smaller percentages to touring artists. After a few years of hitting the fringe circuit, I get it. Fringe can be a space for local artists to grow, discover who they are, and build a loyal following that will support them throughout the year. Plus, local artists draw crowds that will not only see their friends' shows but will then try out other shows at the Fringe.

The US fringe is unique in its emphasis on local artists. Fringes in Canada and Australia emphasize country artists and touring shows, while Edinburgh is all about bringing the world to the city. Again! is a vibrant musical satire, delivering both political and social comedy alongside fun original music. This collaborative production features an ensemble of actors, singers, and dancers (with and without disabilities), showcasing the power of diversity and community. I was impressed with the quality of this professional show: a live band, beautiful large projections, and great lighting and sound.

As someone impacted by chronic migraines, the show's disability-inclusive choices, including an 80-minute intermission-free show with ASL interpreters and comfortable seating, significantly enhanced the experience. These are just some of the thoughtful considerations that reflect Interact's commitment to creating a more inclusive environment for patrons. The pre-show light and noise warnings demonstrating their awareness of potential triggers and I felt at home in the audience.

Hell is Empty kicks off with the Devil, dissatisfied with the current state of affairs, returning to humanity to wreak havoc, navigating modern challenges from online manipulations to political figures and artificial intelligence. Through sketch comedy and song, Interact's actors provide a thought-provoking and giggle-inducing theatrical performance. Running through November 18th at the Luminary Arts Center in Minneapolis, Hell is Empty invites audiences to share in a communal laugh at the absurdities of contemporary life. Director Jeanne Calvit's belief in the inclusivity of art for everyone resonates powerfully in Hell is Empty and I recommend checking out an Interact performance.

Ticket Info: "Hell is Empty" though November 18, 2023

 More information and Tickets

Ticket Prices (General Admission):
Disability: $8
General: $22

Remaining performances:
Saturday, November 16 at 7pm
Saturday, November 17 at 7pm
Saturday, November 18 at 1pm and 7pm

Luminary Arts Center
700 N 1st St
Minneapolis, MN 55401

Luminary Arts Center in Minneapolis is owned and operated by the Minnesota Opera.
